Jesuit Cardinal Defends Homosexual Partnerships

Edit: Some will notice a certain similarity to statements by Cardinal Schoenborn and who defended it using the same argument.  Cardinal Martini just spells things about more explicitly in his new book.  Here's an interesting citation from the Jimmy Akin blog:

Cardinal Schönborn, who like his mentor Pope Benedict is a model of openness and transparency, invited the editors of Austria’s dozen or so major newspapers to a meeting at his residence in Vienna. How many bishops can you name who have extended such an invitation to the press?

Italian Cardinal Martini breaks a lance for homosexual partnerships. -kath.net

Rome (kath.net/KNA)  The Italian Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini has spoken out for homosexual partnerships.  Against fleeting contacts it is "not bad, when two people have a certain amount of stability in relationships",   wrote the previous Archbishop of Milan in a book, from the newspaper, "L'Espresso" published in the Friday edition.  "I do not share the position of people in the Church, who agitate themselves about civil partnerships",  confessed the 85 year old Cardinal.

If homsexuals are living in a stable relationship, the state could guide this, Martini thinks.  Surely, the traditional family must be defended because it supports society.  "If, however, people of different or the same sex would like to sign a contract, to give their relationship a certain stability, why should we be unyieldingly against it?", asks Martini, one of the most visible churchmen and theologians in Italy, in the volume >>Credere e conoscere<< (Faith and Understanding).

Moral teaching firmly holds "for good reasons",  that God wanted the difference between  man and woman.  Some people have decided themselves in honest conviction, because of their previous experiences and habits, from psychological reasons and "possibly also from an inborn inclination" to live in a same sex partnership.  This ought "neither be demonized nor outlawed".  A durable and true friendship between two people of the same sex have in their view a value, even if as a sexual relationship it can not be raised as a model of life as the family can.

Martini expressed the understanding, "not unanimous agreement", for street parades of homosexuals.    In that their necessity for self-expression is apparent, even if this appears "excessively provocative".    As far as the use of condoms the Cardinal said, this could be viewed "in certain situations as a lesser evil".  Other morally acceptable means such as abstinence should not be therefore moved into the background.

The Cardinal, who doth protest too much on this subject, is telling us in an oblique way that he is either a) a homsexual, or b) out of his mind.

Frankly I believe the first proposition to be the true one though I will be more than happy to be proven wrong. But if this assessment is correct, it says quite a lot about how the homosexuals have so easily infested the Catholic priesthood, if they have high level "contacts" like His Eminence.

Back in the 1930s and early 40s Father Leonard Feeney was already warning his Jesuit superiors that there was credible evidence that homosexuals had found their way into the Order. And this Cardinal is a Jesuit. Cardinal Martini would seem to be, as the police would say, a "person of interest" if ever there was any investigation of the homo mafia in the Church.

But there apparently wont be any investigation, because for whatever reason the present Pope seems quite content to have people like Martini, Wuerl, Schoenborn and others mincing around in red robes.

A fish rots from the head down, so they say.

Having spent a weekend at a Jesuit House in Chicago, I can honestly state that bathhouses aren't as gay as the Jesuits. It's time for the Jesuits to go.

Same sex marriage will eventually be a right in the United States. I think that it is a losing battle. The question is whether or not it is really that big of a deal. Is a traditional marriage like mine going to mean less because the state says that gay people can get married? No. That is absurd. The state sanctions divorce but the Church doesn't. Just because the state recognizes something does not in anyway change or harm the teaching of the Church. As long as the Church isn't forced to recognize same sex marriage then what is the big deal? I know the teaching in my home will still be in line with the Church. My children will know that same sex marriage is not a real marriage recognized by God. It deviates from the norm. But, honestly, what are people so scared of? It is a little silly.

The Church fought against no-fault divorce which has had and continues to have a poisonous effect on society. It will continue to fight against other forms of public and private depravity and disorder, which is its mission.

Not sure how you manage to call yourself a Catholic while harboring such notions. It's not credible that you expect your children to maintain Catholic values, given that you're not willing to defend Catholic truth in the public square.

85 and still has not learned the teachings of the Catholic faith or at least has not been converted to them....time is running out. He needs prayers for his conversion because the sands of the hour glass are running until the time he meets Christ.

Saint Catherine of Siena, a religious mystic of the 14th century, relays words of Our Lord Jesus Christ about the vice against nature, which contaminated part of the clergy in her time. Referring to sacred ministers, He says: “They not only fail from resisting this frailty [of fallen human nature] . . . but do even worse as they commit the cursed sin against nature. Like the blind and stupid, having dimmed the light of their understanding, they do not recognize the disease and misery in which they find themselves. For this not only causes Me nausea, but displeases even the demons themselves, whom these miserable creatures have chosen as their lords. For Me, this sin against nature is so abominable that, for it alone, five cities were submersed, by virtue of the judgment of My Divine Justice, which could no longer bear them. . . . It is disagreeable to the demons, not because evil displeases them and they find pleasure in good, but because their nature is angelic and thus is repulsed upon seeing such an enormous sin being committed. It is true that it is the demon who hits the sinner with the poisoned arrow of lust, but when a man carries out such a sinful act, the demon leaves.”

George Orwell stated “During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act.”

An anthropologist by the name of J.D. Unwin initiated a study with the premise that marriage was not necessary and possibly even detrimental to the development of great societies. At the end of this study he completely reversed his hypothesis.

"Perhaps the definitive work on the rise and fall of civilizations," writes Fitzpatrick, "was published in 1934 by Oxford anthropologist J.D. Unwin":

In "Sex and Culture," Unwin studied 86 human civilizations ranging from tiny South Sea island principalities to mighty Rome. He found that a society's destiny is linked inseparably to the limits it imposes on sexual expression and that those sexual constraints correlate directly to its theological sophistication and religious commitment.

Unwin noted that the most primitive societies had only rudimentary spiritual beliefs and virtually no restrictions on sexual expression, whereas societies with more sophisticated theologies placed greater restrictions on sexual expression, and achieved greater social development.
In particular, cultures that adopt what Unwin dubbed "absolute monogamy" proved to be the most vigorous, economically productive, artistically creative, scientifically innovative and geographically expansive societies on earth.

The following are grave words for the USA that come from noted Harvard sociologist Pitirim Sorokin who found no culture surviving once it ceased to support marriage and monogamy. None.

Now we can do a basic analysis of marriage in the USA. Current illegitimacy rates are as follows:

Black 73%
Hispanic 53%
White 29%
for an overall rate of 41%. Currently the rate of illegitimacy for all women under 30 is 52%.

At 85 years old one would think he would know better. One would think he would be preparing for his particular judgment which at the moment would'nt go over very well.

That is exactly the big deal - state approval of SSM recognition is the first step in requiring all others to recognize it.

Methinks the good Cardinal has consumed too many of his namesake.

Well here we are in Canada celebrating homosexual relationships and the premiers are demanding that Catholic schools need gay straight clubs (why not fat skinny clubs or jock nerd clubs) that parents cannot tell their children that homosexual activity is sinful. So obviously when the state recognizes homosexual unions as legal and valuable to society, it must therefore do its best to promote it as a good. That is the problem.

Feeney just found out in the 1930s? Are you serious? The clergy and religious have always been disproportionately gay/lesbian; who else needs the excuse not to get married and find a job? The Jesuits and Franciscans have probably been majority gay since the early 60s; look at John Dear and the chaplain at "Daily Show"/"Colbert Report" Fr. Martin-who's even done a "It gets better" YouTube video. If your gaydar doesn't go off the dial with most priests, you've got something seriously wrong.

You must have gotten in your time machine and made a scientific study. Absurd.

In Ontario, don't you have the problem that Catholic schools get government funding? Time to separate church and state; why do people put up with their tax dollars going to support separate schools?
